Reg.#3198, John Allan

Hello Joe,

I was wondering if you could provide me with more information on Reg.#3198, John Allan. John Allan was my great grandfather and I'm trying to dig-up some history on him.

I noticed that there is a note that states "AKA: Chief Mikitsikan". Was he the son of Reg.#0.55 and father of Reg.#11928"? Does this mean his father and son were members as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS: A reply was sent to Mr. Allan which contained data acknowledging the research and files (with permission) of Vet. Historian Jack White.

  1. Hi Allan,

Sorry for the time lapse, but Buffalo Joe doesn't forget to respond to friends.

Much of my research comes from another RCMP Vet (Jack White) living in BC. According to Jack White, Reg.#3198 John Allan was a Staff Sergeant in the NWMP and he joined on October 27, 1897. He retired on June 22, 1932 and he died on September 22, 1943. He was born on March 12, 1868.

He is buried in Fort MacLeod, AB. He was posted to 'K' Division ( Alberta) and 'M' Division which is the north. He was out for about 2 years (1899 to 1901)--no reason given. Maybe to explore other jobs?

He must have been given an honourary title of Chief Mikitsimkan by one of the early Indian (term of the times) tribes...and the title would show friendship, good works and good deeds. Very few were so honoured.

He was the son of Inspector Officer O.55 (Bronco Jack John Beresford Allan) and he joined the NWMP with his Commission.

Hereunder are notes from Jack White's research:

Earlier Adjutant of 3rd Victoria Rifles.
1861 Went to USA & fought in Civil War.
1865 & 1870 Fought in Fenian raids under Col Osborne SMITH O.2.5 In SAW 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles.
    22 - Retired to Vancouver.

As well as the father of Reg. 11928 -- Beresford Allan, joined RCMP on November 28, 1932, retired on August 31, 1959 and died on Sept 8, 2001. Buried in Lethbridge, AB
Son of Reg.#3198, GrandSon of OF O.55

Once more, I want to give credit to Vet. Jack White who files I researched to provide you with this data.

I hope this reaches you well and that it provides you with some answers. If you are able to connect all the dots, please write to me again and help me with whatever you find.

    Yours truly,

  2. Hello,

I have information concerning this Post disputing the claim that John Allan 1868-1943 is related to John Beresford Allan 1840-1927.
I have tried to find an email so I could send information as an attachment - I have a Word Doc that contains Obituaries and Census Data. Knowing the way other blogs work usually all formatting is removed so census data would be extremely difficult to read.

  3. Hello,

I have recently been working of some extended family genealogy and came across this post.

I was actually looking for the death date of of John W. Allan son of John Beresford Allan.
I noticed that there is an assumption that John Allan 1868.03.12-1943.09.22 is the son of John Beresford Allan 1840-1927.
After a bit more research I make the claim that John W. Allan 1872.12.07-1943.08.17 is John Beresford Allan's son - not John Allan 1868-1943 who died in Macleod.

After a few keystrokes I was able to find John Allan 1868-1943:
    In the Canadian Census - 1901, 1906, 1911, 1916 he :
    - lived in Macleod District in Alberta
    - born in Scotland in 1868
    - immigrated in 1897
    - Occupation ... Police related.
    - Wife is Lois

I was also able to find John Allan's Obituary .... through NewspaperArchive.com - which I have transcribed
Census data and Obituary definitively link to one person: John Allan 1868-1943

Other relevant data from Census and Obituary sources
    - John Jr. Allan was born in 1911
    - John Sr. had a daughter Helen

My genealogy research - I Start from Margaret Sinclair the wife of John Beresford Allan

    3. Margaret Hannah Sinclair
    m. James Robert Clare
    4. James Clare
    4. Arthur Cumming Clare
    m. Rosalie McDonald
    4. Stephen Clare
    m. John Beresford Allen
    4. John W. Allen
    m. Marjorie Frances Mcgachan
    5. Barbara Allan
    m. Rodney Frederick Leopold Keller
    5. Beresford Allan
    m. Grace Helena Short
    5. Frances Phyllis Allan
    m. William Hemenway Clark
    5. Eleanor Catherine Allan
    m. John Gilby Andrews
    m. B. Wallace
    4. Margaret Hannah Allen
    4. Harriet Beresford Allen
    m. Hush Watson
    m. Robert Graham Watson

This gets a little complicated, since the pieces are dispersed all over the place .... and there are minor errors in original data

First of all ... Beresford Allan:

Obituary of John Beresford Allan 1840-1927
    - Surviving relatives ...J. W. Allan is a son

    Obituary of Beresford Allan 1907-2001
    - Was raised by his grandparents
    - lived most of his youth in Vancouver
    - Born November 7, 1907 in Manitoba
    - moved to Lethbridge in 1944
    - Sisters Barbara, Eleanor, and Phyllis
    - Half brother Peter Webb

    Birth Data for Beresford Allan
    - Born November 1907
    - Mother Marjorie note last name incorrect but looks like transcription error

Obituaries of Marjorie Webb and his Step father S. Melville Webb
    - Links Beresford to his three sisters and his half brother Peter

    Census Data
    1911 Canadian Census
    - Living with Grandmother Margaret Allan
    - Note: Margaret Allan stated as Widowed ... which is true for her first husband; the previous household is her son from first marriage.

    Secondly .... John William Allan

Note: unable to find Obituary in the Winnipeg Free Press

    Marriage record for John Allan
    - Father: John B. Allan
    - Mother: Margaret Sinclair
    - Birth Date and Location are different from census data
    - Marriage to Cybele Burgess

Death record for John William Allan
    - Birth 1872.12.07
    - Birth location different from census data
    - Father - John Bureoford Allan .... probable transcription error
    - Spouse - Cybele Burgess
    - Death 1943.08.17
    Census Data
    1891 Census
    - John Beresford Allan occupation N.W.M.P
    - John William Allan age 18 Birth in Man

    1901 Census
    - Jack Allan born 1872.12.07 born Manitoba
    - Madge Clare .... is a lodger ... she is a granddaughter of Margaret Allan (from first marriage)

    1916 Census
    - John Wm Allan Head of household
    - John birth date abt 1873
    - wife Marjorie
    - Daughters ... Barbara, Phyllis, Eleanor ...

I guess I went a little overboard making my my points ... just comparing John Allan's Obituary and Beresford Allan's Obituary it is obvious they are not related.
That John Allan that died in Alberta in 1943 is defiantly not related to John Beresford Allan or his grandson Beresford Allan.
