Superintendent  Donald MacDonald Howard

'Friends Not Forgotten'

The photo of Superintendent Howard was kindly received from Sgt. Bonneau. In his message, Sgt. Bonneau, said:

Dear Joe;

'Recently, my sister-in-law gave me a book that was tossed out of a library in Prince Albert, SK.

The book is Military Law circa 1886 by Major Pennington MacPherson. I was able to discern that the book once belonged to Donald MacDonald Mclean Howard.

I did some research in National Archives and the internet and found quite a lot of information, including photos of Howard him from his prior service in the Northwest Rebellion while a member of the 10th Royal Guards, a Militia Regiment.

Since the book was printed in 1886 a year after the Rebellion Howard would not have been carrying it at the time. However, he likely would have been issued this book shortly after his return to Toronto and prior to joining the NWMP on November 1, 1890.

Superintendent Howard died in Wilkie, SK on April 15, 1939.'

**Sgt. Bonneau included a caution to reseachers, saying: ' In one account from the Rebellion,  another Captain Howard is mentioned -- he manned the Gatling Gun. This Captain Howard was 'on-loan' from the Americans. He is not the same Howard as the NWMP Howard. The confusion over the two men had me chasing my tail for a while.'

Denis J. Bonneau, Sgt.
