A Log Cabin by a Trinity of Members; Reg.#3887, Reg.#3342 and Reg.#5838

Canada

'Friends Not Forgotten'

This note (summarized) about a memorable event was received from Vet. Jack O'Reilly of Toronto today.

Jack O'Reilly says;

'After working on the Reg.#3887, Hayward file off & on for the past three years or so, I finally confirmed yesterday that is he buried in St. Matthews Anglican Church Cemetery, 116 Plains Road, Burlington, ON.

 The church records are not very complete and only show Hayward's age as 87 and that he died in 1971 at Milton, ON. We knew he was in bad health in April 1971 at the Halton Centennial Manor in Milton and he thought he wasn’t going to last long. It appears he was right, as he passed away sometime between April & December in 1971. I can’t find an obit for him yet. I also confirmed that his wife Dora died in 1974 and she is buried with him. I don’t think there is a headstone for Hayward, but we'll check in the Spring.

Jack continues...

'In 1935, Reg.#3887 Hayward, Reg.#3342 Augustus Rust and Reg.#5838 George Purrott built a replica of a log cabin used by the NWMP in the western regions of Canada. This log cabin was located at the corner of Queenston Road and Parkdale Ave in Hamilton, ON. It was used as an Information Bureau and also a club house for the Hamilton area RNWMP Veterans’ Association.

The cabin still exists but it was moved to the Westfield Heritage Centre in Rockton, ON (just West of Hamilton) See photo attached. Bill Helland (now London Vets) did an article on the log cabin in the October 1969 issue of The Quarterly'.

Thanks for the story and the snap, Jack!
