Got good news for you, I have 14 new headstone pictures for you, including Commissioner Herchmer.
I found a total of 44 former NWMP members in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Vancouver. Many don't have headstones or markers so I was not able to get anything on them. I will return another day to glean what there may be and get the rest of the pictures. In the meantime, I will continue to look for more members.
I talked to the Office Manager and she was quite helpful. She told me she had talked to you in the past and hadn't returned the information you requested. She tells me that she has pictures of all of the headstone, but they are not very good. I think you will be pleased with the pictures I will be sending.

Earl was killed when he crashed his own private plane on Six Nations Reserve in Feb. of 1968.
I was stationed with him at that time in Kitchener and was asked to accompany him on that trip. I declined and he got another person --a civilian who was also killed.

While I was working in the Vancouver City Police I was partnered with a "John Cathcart". Several years later he passed on.
He claimed to have been an RCMP member in Calgary for a short time (quite a temper - might have been let go)?
I was a friend of his and delivered the eulogy at his funeral. His remains were taken back to Ireland, to a small town called Fintona, in Amargh.
I can't seem to find his name on your database. Is there any way for you to check whether or not he was a member. Probably a little bit after l965 I would think.

I have come across something startling and very puzzling to me in your list of deceased members buried in the Vancouver area.
One of the names in your database, I am sure, is my uncle William Christopher Apted. I never knew my uncle as a member of the RNWMP force, I always knew him as being a commercial fisherman. Compare the following...
I do have my uncle's death registration record which states he was a fisherman for ten years, he died at the age of 54 from lung cancer, he died in Vancouver October 10,1952, and he is buried in the Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Burnaby B.C.
Now, he could very well have been a policeman in the earlier years and no one ever talked about it. Perhaps he changed his profession when he married my aunt Sadie (Sarah). Were RCMP officers allowed to be married? I know in the early days some police forces didn't allow marriage. I was close to their son Stuart Apted (now deseased) who was a Warden at one of the prisons here until he was injured. He never mentioned his dad being in the police force, but then we seldom spoke of him.
I am sure the man you have my uncle in your databsse, the only discrepancy is the year of his death. You have him dying October 23,1962, but my uncle died October 23,1952. I was a young child at the time so I don't remember him, but his son was a special person.

You may or may not remember me but the last time we crossed paths was in 'Depot' in '74 when I was a cadet and just arrived from St. Stephen, NB. You even caught me one day when my shirt was not ironed and made a point of calling me Dickerson. I have now completed 35 years. How time flies.

Dear Mr. Healy,
Thank you for the excellent website you have created. I have just recently found it and while researching names I found Jimmy Ng's name in the database.
I noticed the database indicates Jimmy is buried at 'Depot'. Jimmy was on my watch in Duncan, B.C. and while his funeral was held in Richmond, BC his ashes were buried in the Ng family plot on Saltspring Island, B.C.
His parents along with the members from his Watch in Duncan Det. and Richmond Det. were present at the burial.
After the graveside service we all placed handfulls of dried flowers from the memorial at Richmond Detachment, in his grave. It was a very moving service.

I took some time today and searched out some of the deseased RCMP members locations in Vancouver and found that many are located in the same cemetery. I have a list now of names and plots etc. and expect that I may get out that way in the next couple of weeks.
Many of the names may require some research at the history library for thier resting place, that I will have to do at another time as the library is in Cloverdale. I will need to go to the library in Cloverdale later in the fall as I do my genealogy research there and a few extra lookups for you is no problem.
I got curious about Commissioner Lawrence William Herchmer and found him to be a bigger than life character. I have read dozens of items about him in the Manitoba papers. He once was charged with assulting an attorney and on more than one occassion was involved with liquor! At least two of his brothers and one of his children were also policemen and his brother William MacAuley Herchmer was Assistant Commissioner for a while.
He sure is an easy person to trace, always in the public eye and in the news etc.

Thank you for all your good work! I saw the article about you in the RCMP's Frontline Perspective today.
I don't know if you're including ex-members in your website/lists, but my father Peter Couves (Reg. #21417) was a member from 1960-1967. He left the Force to pursue interests in the private sector; in his later years, he told me that if he had it to do all over again, he never would have left the Force.
He hailed from Alberta originally, but was posted to 'O' Division when he finished training in 'N' Division. He worked in Trenton and Toronto in various sections. And in 1995, he presented me with my badge.
Dad passed away September 21, 1999, after a long-suffered disease. He is buried in Pembroke, ON, with a non-RCMP marked grave.
Please advise if you would like to include him on your site, and I will forward you all the information. He worked in the days before email and internet, and I'm quite certain some of his troopmates will be interested to track him down, regardless of the circumstances.
I actually ran across one of his troopmates by accident while conducting an investigation a few years ago, so it has been very neat to have that link to that time in my dad's life.

I always found his gravesite to be one of interest to me as I found it when I was pretty young kid. If I ever make my way back to Medicine Hat, I will be taking my camera as I know there are several more members old graves listed and I'm sure you do not have photos yet. Its a matter of being able to find them again in the older sections of the "new cemetery" in the 'Hat'.

You do a great job! Back in the late eighties I worked as a prison guard at the Carmanville Detacment, NFLD and I got to know a lot of members there.

SLOBODA, Joseph 1926-2009 Peacefully on July 17, 2009 in the West Island of Montreal in his eighty-third year.
Joseph will be missed by his wife Amy (nee Gallichan), children Louis (Christine), Michael (Christine), Stephen (Wendy) and Sheila (Richard Boivin) and grandchildren John, Laura and Elaine; Jack and Suzanne; and Richard, Samantha and Joseph (Boivin). He was predeceased by his parents Louis and Anna and brother Frank and leaves behind his sisters Ann, Mary and Jenny. Joseph was born in Holic, Slovakia. He accompanied his mother to Canada when he was three years old. They joined his father in Arvida, Quebec where Joseph spent his formative years.
He lived briefly in Tillsonburg, Ontario before joining the RCMP and settling in Montreal where he met Amy. In 1951, Joseph and Amy were married and he went to work for Canadian Steel Wheel. Joseph also worked for Excell-O and lastly, the Bank of Montreal from which he retired in 1991. Joseph was a big sports fan and supporter, coaching minor-league football in the West Island for a number of years. He also was fond of reading, walking, the great outdoors and aviation.
A private cremation will take place. A visitation will be held at: The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a service at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2009. Reception to follow after the service."We shall not cease from exploration, And the end of all our exploring, Will be to arrive where we started, And know the place for the first time."
