Reg.#23 1/2, Supt. Charles Nicolle, NWMP

Hi there,

I'm a serving member in Saskatoon, SK. My great great grandfather, Charles Nicolle was the first Quartermaster in the NWMP.  Years ago. I spoke to the Museum personnel who advised me that Nicolle had two Reg. number's?

One Reg.# is hard to forget because he's the only member to ever have a 1/2 put into his Reg.# which 23 1/2. After a short career, he settled in the Q\'uapple Valley NE of Moose Jaw and built a ranch which is now a Heritage site and bird conservation area.

Supt. Nicolle is buried about 2 km's from my family farm, at the St. Columbia Church. My family has taken care of the church and grounds from the time the church was built.  His grave stone the largest one on the grounds.

I have always wanted to put something on his stone to indicate he was a NWMP Officer. Can you help?

Hi Joe,

I drove into Surrey, BC today and ventured over to the history library in Cloverdale. I found the following members were cremated, so their acutal burial location were not listed:

White, John Mcfarlan - died Apr. 1, 1983 at Langley B.C.- cremated.
Anderton, Frederick - died October 20,1974 at Surrey, B.C. - cremated.
Rumball, Lee David - died March 23,1987 Self inflicted gunshot wound
Mcilroy, Sheppard Stewart - died Aug. 19,1956 Matsqui/Abbotsford.
Fisher, William Henry - died November 25,1925 at Langley B.C.

I also took headstone pictures of:
Baldwinson, John Brian - died Oct.7,1966
Beaudry, Gordon Edward - died Jan.7,1999
Fry, Alfred E. - born Feb. 4,1935, died Oct.. 26,1989

I retrieved headstone pictures from the Surrey Cemetery Services Office:
Pearson, Frank Buscall - born Apr. 9,1888 - died Jan.21,1965
McMillan, James Irving - 1877 - 1965
Batts, Albert - died Mar.21,1977
Williams, Gary E. - died May 7, 2009

John Cathcart ...was he RCMP?

Hi Joe

While I was working in the Vancouver City Police I was partnered with a "John Cathcart". Several years later he passed on.

He claimed to have been an RCMP member in Calgary for a short time (quite a temper - might have been let go)?

I was a friend of his and delivered the eulogy at his funeral. His remains were taken back to Ireland, to a small town called Fintona, in Amargh.

I can't seem to find his name on your database. Is there any way for you to check whether or not he was a member. Probably a little bit after l965 I would think.

Reg.#7988, William Christopher Apted

Hi Joe,

I have come across something startling and very puzzling to me in your list of deceased members buried in the Vancouver area.

One of the names in your database, I am sure, is my uncle William Christopher Apted. I never knew my uncle as a member of the RNWMP force, I always knew him as being a commercial fisherman. Compare the following...

I do have my uncle's death registration record which states he was a fisherman for ten years, he died at the age of 54 from lung cancer, he died in Vancouver October 10,1952, and he is buried in the Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Burnaby B.C.

Now, he could very well have been a policeman in the earlier years and no one ever talked about it. Perhaps he changed his profession when he married my aunt Sadie (Sarah). Were RCMP officers allowed to be married? I know in the early days some police forces didn't allow marriage. I was close to their son Stuart Apted (now deseased) who was a Warden at one of the prisons here until he was injured. He never mentioned his dad being in the police force, but then we seldom spoke of him.

I am sure the man you have my uncle in your databsse, the only discrepancy is the year of his death. You have him dying October 23,1962, but my uncle died October 23,1952. I was a young child at the time so I don't remember him, but his son was a special person.

I would appreciate it if you have anything to clarify this?

Graves in Prince Albert, SK area

Hi Joe:

I belong to the Prince Albert Branch, SK Genealogical Society and I am currently researching the NWMP & RCMP graves in the Prince Albert area for Reg Keatley. I understand he forwards the data to you.

I have put the data I am gathering in Microsoft Excel. Is it possible to forward it directly to you?

I will also take photos of the graves and send them on to you as soon as possible.

Graves Research Underway - 'E' Div.

Hi Joe,

I took some time today and searched out some of the deseased RCMP members locations in Vancouver and found that many are located in the same cemetery. I have a list now of names and plots etc. and expect that I may get out that way in the next couple of weeks.

Many of the names may require some research at the history library for thier resting place, that I will have to do at another time as the library is in Cloverdale. I will need to go to the library in Cloverdale later in the fall as I do my genealogy research there and a few extra lookups for you is no problem.

I got curious about Commissioner Lawrence William Herchmer and found him to be a bigger than life character. I have read dozens of items about him in the Manitoba papers. He once was charged with assulting an attorney and on more than one occassion was involved with liquor! At least two of his brothers and one of his children were also policemen and his brother William MacAuley Herchmer was Assistant Commissioner for a while.

He sure is an easy person to trace, always in the public eye and in the news etc.

Research: RCMP Obituaries

Hilton Francis Bacon, died 21/06/2003
Leonard Frank Fielder, died 30/03/1970

Hilton Bacon was an old family friend and I remember him as a child in his uniform coming by for a visit. He always attended my parents parties and I've always wondered what ever happened to him.  He was such a kind man.

Leonard Fielder is the father of my cousin's wife.
