Obituary:

'Murray Strickland passed away 29 Dec. 2011 in High River, Alberta. He was stationed in 'F' Div in the 1990's. 

Murray was swimming and suffered a massive heart attack in the water. The paramedics could not resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at the hospital 45 minutes later.

Murray's funeral will be  held at 2:00PM on  Friday, January 6, 2012 at Holy Cross Anglican Church, 2828 - 19th Street NW, Calgary. The funeral home is McInnis & Holloway, 14441 Bannister Rd SE. Calgary, AB.

Murray served in the Force from 1960-09-29 serving in 'J', 'B', 'HQ' & 'F' Div. before his retirement in 1995-09-22.'

Reg. # #29071 (Rt'd). Sgt. A.F. 'Gus' Schmid  passed away on December 29, 2011 in the Saskatoon Hospital shortly after arrival in an ambulance.

He was having breathing problems at home and an ambulance was called. Both his sons accompanied him to the hospital.

Lorraine, his wife, advised that Gus' funeral will be Tuesday 3rd January 2012 at the Knox United Church 838 Spadina Cres., Saskatoon, SK. at 1:00 p.m. 

Gus joined the RCMP on 1971-06-15. He retired on Aug. 2003-08-12. He served in "F", "O" and "K" Div's. He last served with Special "I" and had been a member of the RCMP Dive Team.

At the time of his death Gus was a S/Cst with the Saskatoon City Police. He was due to retire at the end of this month.

Subject: Update on Vet Jim Newman, Ottawa, ON Friends, I spoke to Jim again yesterday.  He was at home and in good spirits.  He has seen his oncologist twice and is scheduled to commence six weeks of chemo in early January, 2012.  He asked me to continue to pass along information to his friends as he hasn't opened his e-mails since the start of his health ordeal.  Jim said he'd try to get something personal out when he's able.  He also asked me to thank everyone for thinking of him.  I am sure he'd love to have short supportive chats with friends & former colleagues.  He may be reached at : jwnewman2006@yahoo.ca Vet Rod Smith New Brunswick Div.

Reg.#7332, W. C. Tyack had broken service in the Force. At one point he left in 1921 and then rejoined again in 1923. He retired to pension in 1949.

In years gone by, the grave site for William Tyack could not be found. It was generally agreed that he must have been buried in an unmarked grave.

Not so. In recent weeks, London Vet Merle Armstrong was successful in following up on more leads. Merle found the grave marker of Reg.#7332, W. C. Tyack in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener, ON.

Great news. Bravo to Vet. Merle Armstrong!

Hello everyone,

Christmas and New Years are just days away now, and I want to take a moment to thank you for all your efforts and hard work on behalf of Canadians.

During this holiday season, I hope you are able to relax and enjoy some downtime with your families and loved ones. It’s important to take the time to focus on those closest to us – the ones who support us day in and day out, and indeed indirectly support the work of this entire organization.

If you are on shift this Christmas or New Years, please be safe out there, and know that your efforts and dedication are not overlooked by Canadians.

To those of you who will spend Christmas overseas, far from your family and loved ones, I want to say a special thank you for your generosity and commitment to bringing peace and stability to those very troubled parts of the world.

And as we ring-in the New Year, I ask that we all resolve to pay particular attention to how we care for one another in the workplace. When we respect each other, we create a safe environment and a more accountable, trusted and productive police force.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who took the time over the past few weeks to connect with me as I assumed my new responsibilities as Commissioner. I am humbled by your kindness and I am energized by the encouragement and support you have shown me. I look forward to working with you all in 2012.

Cst. John McWhinney's grave stone had sunk into the ground at a cemetery in Toronto. It went unnoticed and undiscovered for many, many years. A lengthy search by our Toronto Vets; Rick Morris, Wayne Berry and Jack O'Reilly finally brought the grave back to light.

Our Vet's investigation led them to The Toronto Star dated June 25, 1953. It had an article about two RCMP, age 21, killed in the plane crash. Cst. Willard Boehler originally from Morris, Manitoba and Cst. John D. McWhinney originally from Toronto. 

The Star reported: “…Both [RCMP] died in the crash of an Ottawa Flying Club light aircraft two miles south of the city limits last night (June 24).  [Constable] Boehler was the pilot of the single engine Cessna 140 when the engine quit at about 800'.  He tried landing in a field but crashed into a fence and demolished the plane…”.

Constable McWhinney's grave has been added to the RCMP “O” Division list for yearly inspections.

29/08/2011.

Briefly; CSM 'Bill' Pomfret had a heart bigger than a Parade Square. His job was to yell at recruits. And he did so.

But, Instructors at 'Depot' got to see another dimension to CSM Pomfret. In truth, he was a very sensitive man. I recall, in particular, how he would jest with us (Corporals) as we stood at attention on the Parade Square for Noon Parade. He had a unique sense of humour and on occasion he purposely would try to ignite a laugh. 

One day, as he inspected us prior to Parade, he mumbled only loud enough for us to hear and to get the joke. He said, '...he had heard some rumours or to be more precise, he said he had heard some allegations. For that reason, he said that for the rest of the afternoon, he would be looking for ... alligators!

CSM W. D. Pomfret will be missed.

It is with regret that I advise you of the passing of  Reg.# 21409, Gerald W. Sanford on Wednesday,  14 December 2011 in the hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick.  

No other details are available at this time and funeral arrangements have not been completed.  You will be updated later.  

S/Sgt. Sanford joined the Force in 1960. He retired in 1995 after spending his career in 'J' Div. He was a former Secretary of the NB Vets Association.

This note of great tidings rec'd today from Friend of the Force, Mr. Dick Pulisfer, 'H' Div.

Dear Joe;

I am pleased to report that S/M Hall is not deceased. Keith lives at Wolfville, NS and I was talking to him 1 week ago at our annual RCMPVA Christmas Dinner.

We discussed the days he spent in the Newfoundland Rangers. S/M Hall had a recent fall that put him in a Halifax hospital, for fluid on the brain. He has had a full recovery and is back driving his car.

At about age 82, S/M Hall is "sharp as a tack" and we always have him give Grace at our dinners. ---- Information passed so you can update your file.

Constable Michael Lee Brant Kennedy

Constable Brent Kennedy was born in 1953. His dream was to join the Force which he successfully did in October, 1973.

On November 17, 1974, Constable Kennedy died in an single car motor vehicle accident near Banff, AB. He was off duty at the time.

Following Constable Kennedy's death, his mother sold six acres of land to build a new school.  As well, she donated a further four and one half acres to the school in memory of her son. Constable Kennedy had lived nearby and he had attended local schools.

Brent Kennedy Elementary School in Creston - Kaslo Crescent Valley, British Columbia, was named after Constable Michael Lee Brent Kennedy. 

He was buried his home town at Nelson, BC Memorial Park.

'A tradegy in a family is another way of expressing

the loss and pain of someone who is much loved'. (JJH)

Reg#3188, Constable H. R. Skriving was born in 1879 in London, Ontario. He joined the Force in 1897 and shortly afterwards was shipped off to the South African War.

Constable H. R. Skriving is the younger brother of Reg.#2772, Corporal G. M. Skriving who was killed in South Africa in 1901.

Reg#3188, Constable H. R. Skriving died in 1959. He is buried in an unmarked grave in London, Ontario. His final resting place is visited by London Vet. Merle Armstrong.

Kenneth F. Taylor  (Retired RCMP)  Knights of Columbus 485.

Peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on Friday, December 9, 2011 at the age of 67 years.

Beloved husband of Susan (nee Phelan). Loving brother of Ross and Karen (Bill Hall).

Predeceased by his parents Fred Taylor and Flo Griffiths. Dear uncle of 16 nieces and nephews. 

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. 

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth's Church, 1303 Leaside at Merivale. In memoriam donations to the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Research or St. Elizabeth's Church would be appreciated.

Today was a memorable day for the RCMP as we welcomed our newly appointed Commissionner. As a Vet, I attended the Change of Command Ceremony and I sensed strong positive energy through the event.

First, I am very proud of the appointment of Commissioner Paulson as the twenty third Commissioner of the Force. It was an honour to meet him.

Secondly, I was extremely impressed by the Commissioner's inaugural speech today in front of all ranks of the Force, Minister Mr. V. Toews, other dignitaries and guests. He spoke as an experienced police officer with clarity and determinination. His goal is to provide policing of an excellent calibre to Canadians. I believe he's the person to do so.

Thirdly, the Commissioner did not portray an image of being daunted. To the contrary, he gave solid examples of changes which are required within the Force and he has already begun to implement some of them.

Finally, Commissioner Paulson deserves every support from every source and from every member of the Force. I believe he's the right police officer for the job that lies ahead. Congratulations Commissioner Paulson.

Commissioner Paulson's wife Erin and his family also deserve three loud cheers. It's Team Paulson Time.

These details were received from family members about the life of Reg. #9330, Constable John Henry Irwin.

John Henry Irwin was born in 1900 in Northern Ireland. He went overseas in WWI with the RAF, then came to Canada and joined the RNWMP in 1920. He served in 'D' Div. and 'Depot'.

Constable Irwin died in 1980 and he is buried in Brantford, Ontario.

By the way, Cst. Stephen McCullagh of 'O' Div. is the grandson to John Henry Irwin. One from the RNWMP and one of the RCMP. Both winners, eh?

According to History Notes made by Vet. Jack White, Charles Ross was a Scout for the US Army. In 1877, he participated in the Nez Perce Campaign, the Bannock Campaign of 1878 and the Ute skirmishes of 1879.

He joined the NWMP in 1884 and he was present in 1885 at the start of the Riel Rebellion at Battleford, SK. Soon afterwards, he was in the Battle of Cut Knife Hill in the capacity of  Chief of Scouts under Colonel Otter.

Charles Ross also served in the South Africa War. His rank was Major with Robert's Horse Regiment. He recieved the DSO in 1901 and on three ocassions was mentioned in dispatches.
